Creative Suite 5.5 Begins Adobe Midcycle Updates
Tuesday, April 12th, 2011In a major change to its product-release strategy, Adobe Systems rolled out a Creative Suite midcycle iteration on Monday. Creative Suite 5.5 offers innovations for Flash, HTML5, video, mobile apps, and digital publishing.
From this point forward, Adobe said it will begin issuing midcycle releases to help developers keep up to date with the fast-paced changes in content authoring. Adobe also debuted subscription-based pricing. Designers can tap into Photoshop for $35 a month, or get the Master Collection for $129 a month.
One of the key goals with CS 5.5 is to help designers and developers better target smartphone and tablet platforms. Specifically, Adobe is moving to kick-start the integration of tablets into creative work flows. But will it resonate with developers?
Monetizing Mobile Content
One key to attracting developers is to make it easy for them to monetize the mobile apps they create. Adobe shows that it understands this mind-set with the CS 5.5 Web Premium Suite.
The new iteration helps developers create, deliver and monetize rich content and apps for any screen. With it, developers can create mobile apps for Android, the BlackBerry Tablet OS, iOS and others.
“Adobe has been executing steadily in mobile, and while the closed nature of mobile platforms has been a setback, I think Adobe has made substantial progress here,” said Al Hilwa, an analyst at IDC. “I will keep watching for webOS and Windows Phone 7 support with the AIR runtime.”
Sweet Dreams
Add this to Dreamweaver’s multiscreen preview capability and overall single-project handling for code, and Hilwa said this has to be one of the richest tool stacks that targets all these platforms, plus desktop, with a single language and development environment.
